Q: Hi, I'd like
to root some hedera variagated ivy. I have a sickly adult potted one
that has lost most its leaves. If I cut the ends of the vines into
6" pieces with no leaves at all, do they possibly stand a chance
to root if I also first apply rooting hormone to the cut end and put
in potting soil? - Thanks, Don.

Q: Judy, We just
plant a variety of palms in outside shrub area around a pool. We live
in Arkansas. The Chinese fan palms are turning yellow and some have
dry edges on leaves. I am unsure if I am watering too much or not
enough. Is there anything you can tell me to help. These were planted
by a qualified landscape person who has been in business for a long
time, but palms are not that common in our area. These are supposed
to be cold hardy enough to sustain our weather, although a really
bad winter may be borderline. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
- Thanks, Carol

Q: Judy, I have
a VERY TALL Norfolk Island Star Pine (taller than the rain gutter
on the outside of my house). I've had it since it was a baby and it
is still in a pot. It has to go into the ground or it won't survive,
but I can't find any info about the root system. Please tell me if
it can be planted in a relative small back-yard area or does it need
lots of space. Thank you. ~ Linda

Q: I
just bought and repotted a Chinese Fan palm and I have it indoors
in moderate light. When repotting, I did put some soil on the top
as well to steady the plant and have put a support for the stalks
as well. Otherwise the fronds were just falling down.
I am watering it once in 5 days and the soil looks pretty moist. However
all the new leaves that are coming out are drying up. Even the older
leaves are drying off and falling. Not sure if I am underwatering
or overwatering? Maybe the soil is not suitable but I got a good indoor
potting soil and I also repotted some golden bamboo with it that did
just fine. ~ Nanzeen

Q: I have a peace lily and I just watered
it. The water that leaks through is very very black. I know water
is dirty after watering your plant but not this dark. What is wrong
with my plant? Looks like someone poured black coffee in it, but we
don't drink coffee here so that couldn't be it. thanks for helping
me? - Sandra A: See Judy's

Q: Hi Judy! I found this site during
my search for lipstick plants. I live in Tucson and am very interested
in finding a couple of these beauties to spice up my love affair with
plants. Years ago my grandmother gave me one a lipstick plant, and
I can still remember the dark shiny leaves and the amazing and unusual
blossoms that were always abundant. I also remember that one of the
greatest things was that it was very forgiving of my forgetful watering
habits. Do you know where I could find some of these? Thank-you -

Q: Hi Judy: It
is Jan and as alway I have very early spring fever in my Zone 3 location.
I have purchased very inexpensively an Azalea for our local box store.
It looks very healthy with dark colored leaves and a round bush like
shape. Question - The plant appears to have flowered already, leaving
numberous spike like cluster all over the plant. Should these be cut
off? Next Question There appears to be new green foilage shoots around
where the previous flower where. Should I cut this new growth off
or will they eventually blossom?? I would like to just keep it in
the house until spring and then take it outside to the shaded patio.
Thank you for any suggestions you might have. - Wendy

Q: How are you? As a
result of some company cutbacks, we had to let our “plant lady”
go a couple of months ago. Before she left she gave me instructions
to water Scott’s tree in his office once a week and to use about
1 ½ cans of water. I marked my calendar to remind me each week
and look what happened (see attached photos)…I think I killed
the poor thing!! It’s not even absorbing the water anymore (there’s
a puddle of stagnant water at the base just sitting there since Friday).
So, what do you think? Is it totally hopeless and should I put this
poor tree out of its misery or do you think you give us some of your
expect advise to revive it? - Dawn A:
