Plant Care & Maintenance Manual

Best Temperature For Indoor Plants

Temperature: What’s good for us is usually good for interior plants. Daytime temperatures from 65 degrees-80 degrees and evening temperatures from 55 degrees-70 degrees work just fine. The cooler the temperature, the less water a plant will require. Some plants, like the ficus, are very sensitive to temperature change. Be careful to keep them away from cold drafty windows or doors in the winter or they will drop all of their leaves. Others like the aglonema (Chinese evergreen) will suffer leaf damage if the air gets too cold (below 55 degrees). On the other hand, flowering plants will bloom longer in cool temperatures; and some like the gardenia, need the lower temperatures in order to set their blooms. Plants can also be damaged by intense heat and afternoon sunlight. Never put plants near fireplaces or heating vents. If you place a plant in front of a window, make sure there are shades or curtains to protect it from both heat and cold. Next Section - Humidity>>
